2026_09 September Newsletter

Greetings NCEC members,

Monthly Feature: Terradot:

Our monthly feature is Terradot. Please see the attachment or click HERE to read Terradot: Can Earth’s Oldest Carbon Removal Process Become Its Most Scalable? For billions of years, the Earth has quietly removed carbon from its own atmosphere through the weathering of silicate rocks. Terradot, created in 2022 out of Stanford University, is accelerating this ancient process at commercial scale. Through enhanced rock weathering (ERW) deployments in Brazil and the United States, backed by renowned corporate giants like Google, Microsoft, and Frontier, and now the world's largest ERW platform following its acquisition of Eion Carbon, Terradot is turning geology into climate infrastructure. NCEC spoke with Rachel Miller, who’s focused on Business Operations and Communications at Terradot, to understand how.

With special guests:

  • Phoebe Koundouri, globally renowned mathematical economist who has pioneered human-centered, interdisciplinary modeling systems for sustainable interaction between nature, society, and the economy. She is currently Professor at the School of Economics, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

  • Klaus Lackner, Emeritus Professor, Arizona State University, School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and “Grandfather” of Direct Air Capture (DAC).

  • We look forward to welcoming our NCECAdvisory Board Members at the meeting: Jens Nielsen, Susan Hooper, Jennifer McFarlane and Jan Huckfeldt.

Agenda, Transportation, Visa, and Accommodation info HERE.

Speaker slots are filling up, so please Register to reserve your slot.

The New Carbon Economy Consortium (NCEC), a collaboration of leading universities, national labs, financiers, NGOs, and industry partners advancing a carbon‑conscious future, will convene its 2026 Annual Meeting to accelerate pathways for large‑scale carbon removal deployment and a just transition toward a negative‑emissions economy.

COP31 opportunity:

ASU Global Futures Laboratory is developing a Blue Zone Global Futures Pavilion for COP31in Antalya, Türkiye this year.  The Pavilion will bring together leaders working across science, policy, industry, philanthropy, nonprofits, and youth networks to explore practical pathways for building a more resilient, equitable and sustainable future. We are now inviting session proposals, and we would be delighted to receive one from your organization.  Your work would add an important perspective to the Pavilion’s focus on the systems, partnerships, investments, and decisions needed to move from ambition to implementation. We welcome proposals for panels, roundtables, workshops, and other formats that can prompt thoughtful, practical and action-oriented exchange.  We are especially interested in sessions that highlight collaboration across sectors and point toward scalable solutions. It would be wonderful to receive proposals by October 14th.  I’d also be very happy to answer any questions as you consider ideas. [Submit a session proposal for consideration link]

Invitation

The Parliamentarians' Global Guide to Climate Change and Climate Solutions 2026 will be launched by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Govt of Türkiye on Monday Nov 16 in the Green Zone. If you will be at COP31 and would like an invitation, please let us know. Huge thanks to NCEC Advisory Board member Jennifer McFarlane and member Carbon Click for collaborating on the Carbon markets content for the 2026 guide.

External Network Updates:

  • NY Climate Week 2026 was again a whirlwind of activity, with more than 1,000 events across the city engaging private sector, civil society, cities, states and academics.

    • NCEC Co-Chair Erin Burns, Carbon180 hosted a full day’s programming to explore balancing speed and scale with community engagement, scientific understanding, and political feasibility - and as a result one of our Honorary Chair Klaus Lackner’s PhD students will soon be hosting an NCEC podcast to align with some of our member profiles and expert insights! Thanks Erin 😊

    • NCEC advisory board member Jens Nielsen, CEO World Climate Foundation, hosted an excellent full day of discussions “From Ambition to Action with Accountability” that featured COP30 High Level Champion Dan loschpe and the Executive Director of the Climate Champions team. Some fascinating insights too from Astrid Schomaker, Exec Sec for the Convention on Biodiversity, who reminded us “Nature is a critical part of the Climate solution and they must be addressed together.” On that theme we are partnering with the World Bank Climate Parliament and the Green Climate Fund to bring climate MPs to Armenia for deeper discussions about that important intersect.

  • “It's not the cow - it’s the HOW” - Invitation to join the One Billion Acrescampaign. The Turner Foundation (Chair Laura Turner Seydel) made an official visit to ASU in mid September with co-chair Erin Burns and advisory board members Jens Nielsen and Jan Hucktfeld. They met with ASU Global Futures Lab donors Julie Wrigley and Rob Walton on synergies for positive action. A great opportunity to explore a range of New Carbon Economy solutions being worked on across the university and to showcase the award winning film “Groundswell” that addresses soil carbon sequestration. The latest research indicates that when regenerative agricultural practices are followed, cows actually sequester 3 times as much CO2 equivalent in the soil than they emit! Groundswell is available for viewing on Amazon Prime. Highly recommend! The Billion Acres of regenerative agriculture campaign by 2030 officially launched at NY Climate Week. Please spread the word!

  • Member Terradot: Google Signs Its Largest Carbon Removal Purchase with Terradot Across 200,000 Hectares in Brazil. Google signed its largest carbon dioxide removal purchase to date on 16 September 2026, partnering with ERW company Terradot on a project combining rice methane elimination and enhanced rock weathering across more than 200,000 hectares of rice farms in Brazil. Google commits to 1 million metric tons of CO2e methane elimination by 2030 and 1 million metric tons of permanent carbon removal by 2040. HERE

  • Green Climate Fund: We would like to bring to your attention the call for nominations for the Green Climate Fund Indigenous Peoples Advisory Group (IPAG) for the 2027-2030 term which is available at: Call for Nominations for the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Group 2027-2030 | Green Climate Fund  The call seeks nominations for vacancies in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Nominations should be submitted by Indigenous Peoples’ institutions, bodies or organisations through an Indigenous Peoples-led self-selection process and must be received by 9 October 2026.

  • Climeworks Achieves More Than Fivefold Increase in CO2 Capture at Mammoth Plant, Iceland. Climeworks announced that its Mammoth direct air capture facility in Iceland removed 675 tonnes of CO2 in the first half of 2026, compared with 119 tonnes in the same period in 2025, representing a more than fivefold increase in net removal. Operating costs per tonne fell by more than 50 percent. Improvements came from upgrades to the sorbent filter material and mechanical plant design. HERE
