INTERVIEW

The following interview was conducted with Caroline Knowles, Chief Customer Officer, Generate Zero.

  1. How does Generate Zero support enterprises to reduce their carbon emissions?

Generate Zero is at the forefront of decarbonisation innovation, with an AI-powered platform which allows organisations to measure, reduce, and report emissions. The decarbonisation module within the platform supports organisations to set science aligned targets within the tool and create reduction initiatives to achieve these and report on progress. The platform has pre-built data models which allow the banks and insurers to report their scope 3 financed and underwriting emissions.

  1. What are the biggest challenges your clients face in carbon reduction?

The biggest challenges our clients face relate to data. Many organisations face challenges capturing data to measure their footprint. Carbon emissions data is typically fragmented, therefore automating the ingestion of data is critical. Scope 3 measurement also presents a challenge, including supplier emissions and financed emissions; our prebuilt models and supplier and customer tools help solve these challenges.

  1. Who are the key stakeholders in the carbon reduction space?

Key stakeholders in the carbon reduction space include:

Businesses and Corporations: Companies in various sectors (energy, manufacturing, transportation, etc.) are increasingly adopting sustainability practices and carbon reduction targets

Governments and Policymakers: They set regulations, incentives, and targets for emissions reductions at local, national, and international levels

Investors and Financial Institutions: They influence corporate behavior through sustainable investment practices and funding for green technologies

  1. Who else is doing work like this in the field?

There are platforms that help enterprises measure and reduce their emissions (Persefoni, Watershed, Invizi, Salesforce Sustainability Cloud) but the Generate Zero platform is unique in that it also covers financed emissions to help financial institutions measure and reduce their financed emissions. We have also built a global company GHG emissions database to help report on business loan emissions and supply chains, in order to help banks make lending decisions based on their current sustainability and transition plans.

  1. How are you measuring carbon reduction?

Our reduction planning module allows you to set science-aligned targets and craft robust plans leveraging our initiatives library. Organisations can track progress against your targets, take corrective action, monitor and report all in one platform.

  1. How is it verified?

The Generate Zero platform provides disclosure and reporting functionality to facilitate and support climate-related disclosure obligations. The platform has been externally verified as reporting to GHG protocol and ISO standards and meeting climate disclosure and climate reporting standards.

  1. How do groups like the New Carbon Economy Consortium allow you to further your progress?

The New Carbon Economy Consortium (NCEC) can support a sustainability platform like Generate Zero in several ways:

  • Collaboration and Networking: NCEC can facilitate connections with industry leaders, researchers, and policy makers, enhancing Generate Zero’s network and influence

  • Research and Development: By partnering with NCEC, Generate Zero can access cutting-edge research and innovative technologies in carbon management, helping to improve its offerings

  • Funding Opportunities: Collaborating with NCEC may open doors to grants or investment opportunities aimed at projects that advance carbon neutrality

  • Education and Advocacy: NCEC can help Generate Zero advocate for effective policies and practices in carbon reduction, while also providing educational resources to its community

  • Data Sharing and Analytics: Access to NCEC’s data and analytics can enhance Generate Zero’s ability to measure impact and improve its carbon reduction strategies

  • By leveraging these resources, Generate Zero can amplify its impact and drive more effective solutions in the sustainability space.

  1. Anything else you’d like to share?

Whilst we are currently focused on carbon emission reduction, we will also be expanding in future to focus our platform on nature, to assist organisations to meet the future requirements of the TNFD (Task Force for Nature Related Financed Disclosures).
